Description: Portrait of Nelson Story, Sr. (1838-1926). Known as one of Bozemans richest man, making his fortune in gold in Virginia City. He made a risky cattle drive from Texas to Montana, inspiring the book, "Lonesome Dove." He opened one of Bozemans first banks, owned a flour mill, was a real estate magnate, and donated land to start Montana Agricultural College. With his son, Walter P, they built the Walter P. Story building in Los Angeles, CA in 1908, one of that citys first skyscrapers. Vintage 4.25x6.5 in. cabinet card, 4x5 in. copy negative.

Nelson was Lt. Governor of Montana from 1921-1925. Walter was a Major General in the CA National Guard and a prominent Los Angeles businessman. The Walter P. Story building in Los Angeles, CA was one of the 1st skyscrapers in LA. Byron and Bud funded and built the Ellen Theatre in Bozeman to honor their mother. Vintage 4x6 in. print
